Call it too emotional or whiney or even criticise how dominating the vocals can be over the music, but this is a band who will crawl into your head with brutal honesty and thought-out musical arrangements. La Dispute tell stories through literature in parallel to their own struggle and while that idea is just supposed to be a theme on latest album Wildlife it’s clealy been a common element to pretty much every single one of their songs. At the same time, and perhaps most poignantly, some differences still exist (and differences always will) but neither the record, nor the friendship that inspired it, suffers.’ Which makes checking them out all the more interesting if it doesn’t annoy you.Į.g, On describing why they did a split with band Koji, they say: ‘Through that, the aforementioned emotional and personal similarities shine through, showing that while contrasts may exist between people on the surface, a common thread binds them. A lot of people can’t handle the truth or quite simply would rather not bask in anguish but touching on themes of broken homes, affairs and lost love probably hits a sore spot for everyone. First album ‘Somewhere at the bottom…’is basically a concept album about an affair based on the chinese myth of the princess and the cowherd which may seem pretentious AND intensely emotional but in my opinion it’s such an enagaging listen from start to finish. I find myself transfixed by every story told. Pain and love has obviously always gone hand in hand for someone in the band. #1 They quote from poems and novels #2 They self-reflect on their own shitty broken hearted existence. Musically they use wood blocks, deschler mallets, the sound of feet on floorboards, howling dogs and have written songs around improvised drum parts Lyrically there are two sides to La Dispute. The second time was in my bedroom and the lyrics really struck me. I never heard their first 7 eps and album the first time round but after neglecting listening to them for six years I soon played them on my radio show and started listening to them daily. No room to stand. On first listen it didn’t really excite me and I instantly wrote them off as a whiney band with emotional issues. La Dispute, I first heard them on an arduous train journey from Sheffield to Derby.
